Tenochtitlan, Mexico 1526—but not as history remembers it…
Driven by fiery visions of the end of the world, Aztec Emperor Cuauhtemoc averted the Spanish Conquest, and now he seeks to end the inter-tribal fighting that would have condemned the empire. When he discovers a woman from his visions working in his palace, he knows he must win her trust only the infamous La Malinche can help him turn his enemies into allies.
Malinali has spent her whole life in slavery, passed from one abusive master to the next, and to her, Cuauhtemoc is no different than the other noblemen who’ve made her years miserable. Cuauhtemoc, however, is a determined man, and with time and work, her suspicion turns into trust, and trust grows into love.
But is love enough to truly change destiny? Especially when the shadow of unraveled history threatens to turn them into the enemies they were meant to be?

I wasn’t sure what to expect here – its a “what if” book, where the writer takes known events in history, and rewrites them to show what could have happened had things gone differently – hence the “what if” tag. This isn’t a period of history I know anything about, so for me it didn’t matter what “did” happen, this felt very real. I enjoy novels set back in time like this, and when they feel as real as this I’m mentally transported back in time living life alongside everyone else.
I loved the tiny details the brought the scenes to life, loved how we could see how someone life could change in an instant as Malinali’s did, born a princess, the first child, in an area where females could inherit and rule she was sold into slavery after her father died. A cover story by her mothers new husband meant no one looked for her.
Cuauhtemoc had a vision years ago where he saw what he must do to save his peoples’ future, where if he didn’t make some sweeping changes the Spanish would overrun them. Traditions stick strongly though, and he has to fight hard. When he sees Malinali one day attending to his sick wife he knows her from his vision. Had he not taken the measures he did she would have aided their enemies, and now he needs to decide is she a potential traitor, or as he’s changed things could she be a force for good. He’s attracted to her too on a personal level, but unlike his peers doesn’t make a habit of taking advantage of his female slaves. He spends time with her, learns she’s an astute thinker and strategist, and he learns to value her opinions. Having been brought up in a different region the knowledge she has is valuable to him. To her though he’s just another nobleman, and she’s been used and abused by too many to have her head turned by a good looking man. She does admit to herself though he is hot! Slowly they both learn more about each other, but there’s always a maggot in the blossom, and just when things have finally worked out for them it shoots out dramatically and everything falls apart.
Its a fabulous read. I’d started it intending to read halfway through then finish another novel, but got so engrossed I simply had to know what happened, and how it ended. I couldn’t put it aside without knowing the end. Its probably not a book I’d re read for a long time, but its one I loved, took me to another time and place, and allowed me a peek into what could have been. The only problem I had was the terms and names, and a glossary for them would have been very useful. Mostly I worked it out from the context, but it would have been good to be able to just quickly check I was right. I’m reading an ARC though, so maybe in the final novel there will be one.
Stars: Five, a fabulous read, taking me to another time and place.

Words cannot describe how much I love this book. Would that there was a sequel already on the way, but just the knowledge that this is merely book one makes my heart sing. I want more of Malinali and Cuauhtemoc. Perhaps the second book might find them a few months later with her expecting a child and the threat of the spaniards looming on the horizon once more? Please, I don't really care what it's about so long as they come back for another well thought out adventure. I wasn't certain how good the book might be when I stumbled over it by accident, but I thought I'd give it a try. And, wow, just wow! I was simply blown away.
If you like alternate histories, especially ones that turn the known history of a time and place upside down, then this will give you shivers, in a good way of course. And it doesn't hurt to know that this is a romance as well. Such thought, care, and much research went into the making of Fugitives of Fate and every single detail enriches the story, giving us a glimpse into what life might have been like for the Mexica if Tenochtitlan had never fallen to the Spanish invaders.
So give this book a try. I recommend it highly and you won't regret a moment of it. This I can almost completely guarantee.
