Lata Subramanian has achieved a masterful glance into the world of the corporate climb in this fascinating book. I was particularly interested in the subject matter because of my own employment journey and at many times in the book I felt the author must have been eavesdropping on conversations I have had with my friends and family about my career. I am so glad I got this book - it was almost therapeutic and certainly cathartic. At one point the author talks about how the prettier girls were hired to work the front desk at a posh hotel while others deemed 'less' attractive were given other tasks. This was told in such a frank but objective way that my heart broke for what must have been a distressful situation to find oneself in. That brings me to one of the things I loved abut this book. At no point does Subramanian deliver a 'sob story' or a tale that is bitter or cautionary. She simply tells her truth with insight, wisdom beyond her years, perspective and a wonderfully wry yet engaging sense of humor. I'm also especially glad she decided to share bits of her upbringing and family life with us. it made the book infinitely more intriguing but it also gave us insight into how she developed her personality, strong character and moral core. I only wish things had advanced more than they have in the intervening years since the author experienced her journey through the corporate ton but with more books like this I have no doubt that more women, at least, will have an excellent example of how to get ahead with your principles intact and your head held high.Product details

A Dance with the Corporate Ton Reflections of a Worker Ant by Lata Subramanian is, to say the least, an insightful narration of the author's journey in the corporate world. She has started the book from the moment she started looking for a job to the point when she walked hand in hand with the top players in various industries to her early retirement from it all. She started her career as a Room Service Order Taker in The Oberoi Towers. According to her observation, she was not offered a job at the front desk of the hotel because that place was reserved for very attractive people. Anyways, she took her job very seriously but grew tired of the routine work involved in this job profile. Soon, she decided it was time to move ahead. She joined one of the leading advertising companies of that time in India, Lintas, and climbed a ladder of success almost reaching for the stars. With the zeal to work hard and constantly learning every aspect of the advertising industry, including the complicated lingo, she received various recognitions. However, these recognitions did not succeed in tying her to this one company, and soon she moved on to the next venture.
Her journey is a very mesmerizing one. I felt motivated, fascinated, and inspired while reading her story. It was as if Lata showed a mirror to me. I could relate to her feelings towards the bell curve involved in the appraisal process. As she felt overwhelmed by the process of grading her team members according to the requirement of this curve, rather than based on their hard work and dedication, similarly I feel every time the time of appraisal comes on my head. This strange criterion of judging and rating the people made her realize that she cannot get a flair for management. Her anger towards one of the organizations, where she worked, for handing over pink slips to the clueless employees after a merger is visible in every word of that chapter. That anger shows the purity of her heart and I admire her for it.
Lata has not just narrated her journey, she has given several pieces of wisdom. Her best advice is that one must be prepared and not depend on their employer's mercy. Throughout the read, she reminded me of myself. Her tendency to stand her grounds even when everyone stands against it is admirable. When everyone in her office was insisting her to get a makeover, she did not crumble, rather made a statement that she wishes to be judged by her work and not by her appearance. The evidence of her high moral values is visible until the last chapter. She has cracked open the corporate world and presented the forensic report of this entity for the world to see. I am sure the readers will be able to connect to her perspective of the world.
To keep the book entertaining, she has used humor, which is not "haha" funny, but is capable of bringing a smile to the readers. One thing that I particularly enjoyed was the cute graphics that are present here and there in the book. While reading, I used to get very excited to find these illustrations.
The mention of various famous TV segments, such as Mad Men, set the right mood and laid a fantastic foundation for the facts that she was making.While narrating her story, she paused at various places to ponder over a word and its origin, for instance. In the beginning chapters, when I was trying to understand where the story might flow to, I was fascinated by these interruptions; however, later these seemed like speed bumps and very distracting. Other than this minor issue, I loved Lata's writing style and her intense journey.
I would recommend this book to the readers who enjoy reading the journey of an individual in the field of career and wish to gain a deep insight into the corporate world. This book has everything for the readers of this category humor, facts, inspiration, and an extraordinary experience.

How do I describe A Dance with the Corporate Ton? It is the author's memoir, yes. So, she writes about her middle-class Tamil family. She writes about her life choices, most of them unconventional, and the reasons behind it. She, primarily, writes about her professional experiences.
Lata Subramanian is a different book. Different in a good way, that is.
What makes it especially different is the way it is written - the author's observation skills, analytical point of view, teamed with her wit, makes it a book that you'll make you think as you will smile through reading it.

As I read the foreword with the author explaining what London Ton is, I wondered what kind of book I was about to read. It did not read like a typical book.
There are details of a middle class girl struggling to make her place in the corporate world. The many underlying, unspoken truths spoken matter-of-factly.
The book is a description / picture of the time it portrays - 1970s is the tentative beginnning.
The tone of the book is conversational and laid-back... a little intellectual, at times serious conversations may be.
She tells a story of a female (she herself) growing up in a conservative family.
She goes from her own life as an employee in hotel and advertising industry to Pride and Prejudice, Downton Abbey, Mad Men and more.
She has a knack for finding the connection of her story with the world of fiction. Something I really enjoyed reading.
Lata has a very interesting way of looking at things. You read her and think, that's so true, why didn't I think of it this way.
I like the pace of the book. It is leisurely, but not slow. There is a lot of information, very varied kind. There are facts and details of the author's career in hotel industry, advertising, etc.; glimpses into her personal life; many philosophical thoughts and quotes; and more. Yet it doesn't feel like too much has been cramped into it.
She doeosn't come across as preachy. It is as if she is herself discovering, analysing, thinking as she is writing.
She doesn't state opinions, she wonders, she questions herself. It's feels like a dialogue. And you feel like laughing and replying, "why didn't I think of that".
A Dance with the Corporate Ton inspires.
It is not a book that imposes opinions on you. It discusses, it ponders, it wonders, and you as a reader feel you are a part of it.

A Dance with the Corporate Ton is a practical book on the corporate world. The author explains her path and choices and describes her experiences, all detailed with reasons. It is a book that would be very helpful to anyone who's trying to make place for themselves in this world and still trying to maintain their own identity.

You don't know which ball is going to catch your eye next. You are spell bound, enjoying the show and more often than not, unconsciously smiling.
